Construction Skills Network forecasts 2018-2022 - North East

The North East’s construction industry is the only one projected to decline over the next five years, with annual average falls of 0.8%. This is the weakest outlook across the UK regions and devolved nations.  The new work sector is forecast to decrease by an average of 1.3% per annum while the repair and maintenance sector is likely to fare better with marginal average yearly expansion of 0.2%.

  • Growth is expected to focus on the industrial sector at 2.2% in the short term
  • Employment in North East is forecast to decline by an annual average of 1.6%
  • North East has an average recruitment requirement of 840

What does this mean for construction jobs?

This means that demand for some trades will be higher than others. The jobs most in demand over the next five years, in the North East, are:

  • Non construction professional, technical and IT staff  - 170
  • Construction trades supervisors – 160
  • Specialist building operatives – 90
  • Labourers - 80
  • Senior, executive and business process managers - 60
