Tylorstown bricklayer is Inspirational Apprentice of the Year

Joshua Williams, a 24 year old bricklayer from Tylorstown, has been named Inspirational Apprentice of the Year at the 2019 Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) Apprenticeship Awards.

The CITB Apprenticeship Awards celebrate the achievements of apprentices and employers across the UK for their commitment and dedication to construction.

The winners were presented with their awards at a ceremony hosted by broadcaster and property entrepreneur, Sarah Beeny. The ceremony took place at Merchant Taylors’ Hall in London (7 November).

Josh completed his level 2 apprenticeship with Y Prentis. Through the shared apprenticeship scheme he studied towards his diploma at Cardiff and the Vale College while placed with host contractors Morgan Sindall and Jehu Group. He is now a qualified bricklayer working with APL Building Services. During his apprenticeship, Josh embarked on a 10-day trip to build a house for local people in Kenya. This was out of his comfort zone, being his first time travelling overseas and working in high temperatures, but it was a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Josh said: “I am so pleased and at the same time shocked to win this award. My apprenticeship was a great experience and I would fully recommend it as a route to a brilliant career because, you get the balance of learning and practical experience. I’d like to thank Y Prentis as they supported me all the way in my apprenticeship”.

Lee Thomas, Apprenticeship Officer at CITB, said: “Nothing is ever too small for Josh; he is extremely hardworking and never complains about anything. He is a model student and all contractors he has worked with have complimented his attitude and work ethic. I admire Josh’s motivation and determination to do well for himself. I am really proud of Josh, he is extremely deserving of this award.”

Apprenticeships provide a fast track route into the construction industry. With so many rewarding careers opportunities in construction there is something out there for everyone. I wish Zoe all the best in her career in construction.”
