Key information for newly registered employers
CITB is here to support the construction industry. We help Levy-registered employers like you, upskill their workforce by providing grants and funding for training. We work with industry to set and review training standards to improve site safety and we promote construction as a positive career choice to attract new talent to the industry.
You need to be registered with CITB if your business is engaged wholly or mainly in construction industry activities and you employ payroll staff and/or subcontractors. Find further information on registration.
Levy Return information
Once your business is registered with CITB, you must complete and send an annual Levy Return regardless of the amount you have paid to your employees.
You’ll receive your first annual Levy Return in May following your registration with your first Levy Assessment in the following April.
Your annual Levy Return can be submitted online or by post and will need to be returned by 30 June to ensure there is no disruption to grant & funding payments. Failure to submit a completed Levy Return will result in an estimated assessment being issued, click here for information on Levy Return and deadlines.

How much Levy will you pay?
As a Levy-registered employer you are legally required to complete a Levy Return, including details of your company’s wage bill and any payments made to subcontractors. This helps us assess whether you are required to pay a Levy, as not all employers are.
See the current Levy rates, and information about the ‘Small Business Levy Exemption’ and ‘Small Business Levy Reduction’ available to employer with a wage bill below £450,000.
To help you see what your CITB Levy may look like, we have produced a simple Levy calculator.
When to Pay?
You need to pay the Levy, or set up a Direct Debit to pay by instalments, within one month of receiving your Levy Assessment Notice.
There are two ways you can pay the Levy:
- By Direct Debit in interest-free monthly instalments. This service helps you to spread the payments across a year and is easy to set up
- In full as one lump sum.
Find further information on payment or setting up a direct debit.
