The project will develop a programme to accredit organisations in the British Standards Institution ISO18404 for Lean Construction.

One organisation will receive the accreditation and a best practice case study will be developed to support other employers through the process.

After the project, one employer will become accredited in the ISO Lean Construction standard. Another will have undertaken training so they have the ability to do so. The guidance and training materials used to achieve this will be made available to industry so that other employers can go on the same journey and achieve accreditation.

  • Training resources developed to deliver Lean Leaders and Lean Practitioners
  • Best practice document developed to support employers through accreditation

End of project summary

This project ended in June 2019.

Gilbert and Good are the first construction company in the world to achieve the international certification ISO 18404 for Lean and Six Sigma. The ISO 18404 provided a dual approach towards lean management, creating a structured programme of training and development and a formal framework to evaluate the company’s systems and processes for increased efficiency.

Collaboration with 10 companies ensured 100 people trained in Lean basics, with 6 Lean Leaders trained and 4 certified. The impact of funding has been to enable Gilbert and Goode to adopt standardised approaches; train and develop staff and suppliers, and deliver projects to a higher standard, with reduced costs and improved safety and quality.

This company is driving out waste at all stages of the design and construction process, thereby increasing productivity, efficiency and is building better buildings.
