Formwork apprenticeship course

This apprenticeship course is for people who want to gain a vocational qualification in formwork, while gaining industry experience.

You’ll learn a host of formworking principles, such as erecting, striking and repairing formwork, as well as processes involved in basic project documentation, health and safety, and levelling and setting out. You’ll also learn fundamental building information modelling (BIM) and design principles.

Furthermore, you’ll receive training in the theory of the construction industry, as well as enjoy comprehensive practical experiences in the featured categories of training.

Course content

The course covers practical principles in:

  • Fabrication and repair of wooden and system formwork
  • Erect and strike: wooden and system formwork
  • Erect and strike: crane handled formwork
  • Working at height
  • Small tools operation
  • Movement of plant
  • Manual handling.

You’ll learn basic skills, knowledge and awareness in:

  • Interpreting information
  • Risk assessments and method statements
  • Construction elements
  • Effective communication
  • BIM
  • Basic project documentation
  • Site communication
  • Health and safety.

You’ll also focus on personal skills in:

  • Mathematics
  • English
  • Drug and alcohol awareness
  • Time management
  • Personal organisation.

Teaching and assessment

18 weeks’ training delivered over 18 months

Block 1: 2 weeks

Block 2: 4 weeks

Block 3: 4 weeks

Block 4: 4 weeks

Block 5: 4 weeks

Qualifications you gain

  • Level 2 Formwork standard
  • Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Formworking
  • Level 1 Functional Skills, working towards L2 (test must be taken)

Methods of assessment

You’ll be regularly assessed using a range of methods, including written assessment, practical assessment, verbal questioning and presentation, and multiple-choice testing. You’ll also be required to complete college-based and site-based activity journals. You’ll be given clear, direct and constructive feedback to enable you to make progress and successfully complete the course.

Mandatory entry requirements

Academic

Maths and English GCSE Grades 3-9 or D-A.

To help us assess your suitability for the course, you'll need to complete a skills learning exercise and possibly attend college for further tests.

Other information

The course involves:

  • strenuous physical activity
