Plant Mechanic Apprenticeship Level 2 Construction Equipment Maintenance Mechanic

Typically 18 to 24 months working towards the apprenticeship standard, a minimum of 20% of this time is to be completed as off the job training.  College attendance is completed in blocks of 1-4 weeks duration and counts towards the off the job training.

Course content

The course will give the delegate the Knowledge, Skills, and Occupational Behaviours to become a Professional and Successful Construction Equipment Maintenance Mechanic in the challenging and fast paced industry of Construction Plant Repairs and Maintenance. The College based training and assessment part of the apprenticeship includes the skills and underpinning knowledge of the Health and Safety Legislations and behaviours in the Construction industry.  Underpinning knowledge, maintenance and basic repairs of the operating systems associated with the various types of machinery and equipment used within the construction industry, this will include:

  • Servicing and basic maintenance requirements and repairs
  • Hydraulic systems
  • Electrical systems
  • Pneumatic systems
  • Power units and fuel systems
  • Brake systems
  • Transmission systems
  • Undercarriage, steering and suspension
  • Small Plant
  • Bench fitting
  • Welding and cutting
  • Breakdown and Recovery Procedures

The course will also expand the delegates communication, planning skills, awareness of safe working practices and the need to be a team player within the work environment.

Teaching and assessment

  • A mixture of on-the-job training and supervision. College based training, split between classroom theory and workshop practical sessions. Maths and English mandatory requirements met.

Methods of Assessments

The apprentice will be regularly assessed during the college-based training via practical tasks and written assignments which will include constructive feedback from the instructors. The apprentice will be expected to complete a Log of Progression, detailing their development of knowledge, skills, and behaviours. There will also be a series of End Point Assessments (EPA) which includes an On-line Knowledge Test, Practical Assessments, and a Professional Interview.

Level 1 Functional skills.

Mandatory entry requirements

Academic

The employer will set selection criteria, however, this will include Maths and English GCSE Grade 3-9 or D-A. Basic understanding of information and communication technology. The apprentice will have to achieve Level 1 English and Maths before taking the End Point Assessment.
