Roof Slater and Tiler apprenticeship

Duration: 24 months
Structure: 18 weeks of training over 2 years with an End Point Assessment in the 2nd  year
Location: NCC East (Residential college in Norfolk)

This apprenticeship course is for people who want to gain a vocational qualification in Roof Slating & Tiling occupations:

Roof Slating and Tiling training will be given at college while gaining industry experience through an approved apprenticeship. 

You’ll receive training in roof slating and tiling occupation, as well as enjoy comprehensive theory and practical experience in the featured categories of training.

Course content

The course will cover practical principles in:

  • Carrying out safe working practices in construction
  • Selecting the quantity and quality of resources for construction operations
  • Preparing roof slating & tiling, materials and components for installation
  • Applying roof slates and interlocking tiles to the structural fabric
  • Providing setting out for roof battens, slates & tiles
  • Storing resources ready for use
  • Building methods and construction technology.

You’ll learn basic skills, knowledge and awareness in:

  • Interpreting information 
  • Risk assessments and method statements 
  • Construction elements 
  • Effective communication 
  • Basic project management 
  • Site communication 
  • Safe use of hand & power tools
  • Safe working practices while working at height
  • Health and safety
  • Environmental Issues in construction
  • PREVENT.

You’ll also focus on personal skills in:

  • Mathematics 
  • English 
  • Drug and alcohol awareness 
  • Time management 
  • Personal development
  • Careers Information & guidance
  • Safe use of access equipment
  • Manual handling.

Teaching and assessment

18 weeks of training delivered over 24 months.

  • Week 1: College Induction & Health & Safety module 1
  • Weeks 2 to 18: Theoretical and practical training at NCC East in two-week blocks
  • Gateway: Portfolio preparation
  • End Point Assessment: External assessment at NCC East. 

Qualifications you gain

Standard STO270 Level 2 Roofing Occupations (Roof Slater & Tiler pathway).

You’ll be regularly assessed using a range of methods, including written assessment, practical assessment, verbal questioning and presentation, and multiple-choice testing. 

You’ll also be required to complete college-based and site-based activity electronic journals (Off the Job Training Hours). You’ll be given ongoing clear, direct and constructive feedback to enable you to make progress and successfully complete the course.

Entry requirements

Due to the nature of the Standards and the complexities of difficulty, the National Construction College has implemented entry requirement rules. We require apprentices undertaking a Level 2 Apprenticeship to have already achieved:

  • Maths and English at GCSE 3-9 (old GCSE D-A)

Or

  • We can also accept a Functional Skills L1 or above where an applicant has taken Maths and English qualifications after school.

Don’t worry if your apprentice doesn’t meet the entry requirements, we can organise initial assessments and look at each learner individually, to see if we can support them in their learning via an appeal panel.

The course involves:

  • Strenuous physical activity
  • Working at heights
  • Wearing PPE/RPE
  • Working to deadlines.

The following CITB grants are available for employers to fund their apprentices on this course:

If you applied for your apprenticeship through the Education and Skills Funding Agency, only applicants aged between 16 and 18 who have not been placed on a training scheme before are guaranteed full funding
