Purpose/scope

The purpose of personal and respiratory protective equipment for licenced asbestos removal work refresher standard is for delegates who have previously passed training to the full Personal and respiratory protective equipment for licenced asbestos removal work standard or subsequent refresher training and can provide proof of attendance.

Delegates pre-requisites

Delegates must have successfully completed training to the Personal and respiratory protective equipment for licenced asbestos removal work standard or subsequent refresher 3 years prior to attending this refresher.

Instruction/supervision

As a minimum, course trainers must be able to demonstrate that, in relation to this standard, they have:

• a train the trainer or instructional techniques course certificate e.g. NVQ Level 3 award in learning and development or higher
• successfully completed training to this standard
• at least 5 years relevant industrial experience
• a verifiable CV

Delivery

Delivery may be in an on or off the job environment.

All materials and equipment must be of a suitable quality and quantity for delegates to achieve learning outcomes and must comply with relevant legislation.

The class size and delegate/trainer ratio must allow training to be delivered in a safe manner and enable delegates to achieve the learning outcomes.

The following delivery methods may be used in the delivery of this standard:

• a blend of classroom and workshop

This standard is considered to contain 51% or more practical training.

This standard is considered to be set at an intermediate level.

Assessment

Methods of assessment considered appropriate for training delivered against this standard are:

For the successful completion of training, delegates must complete an end of course practical assessment or knowledge test that measures all learning outcomes and has a pass or fail criteria.

Where this training is assessed using multiple-choice questions, a minimum of 10 questions must be asked and delegates are required to achieve an overall pass mark of at least 80%.

Quality assurance

Assured

Quality assurance against this standard will require initial approval of the training organisation and their content mapped to the standard.

CITB will also conduct an approval intervention, either desk-based or centre visit, to ensure the training organisation can meet the requirements of the training standard.

Approved training organisations (ATOs) will be required to present information on records of training and assessment upon request to CITB for desk-based analysis. They will also be visited annually by the CITB quality assurance team.

Learning outcomes to be refreshed

The delegate will be able to:

• state the activities which could result in asbestos exposure and the importance of controls to prevent exposure
• state the control limit and describe the purpose of air monitoring and how it can be used to assess exposure including the importance of personal monitoring
• comply with all workplace health, safety and welfare legislation requirements
• maintain relevant records in accordance with the organisational procedures
• prevent the risk of damage to occupational resources and surrounding environment when moving, handling and/or storing resources
• state the purpose, appropriate choice, and correct selection of a range of RPE including limitations
• describe and demonstrate the correct use, cleaning, maintenance and safe storage of RPE and the need to ensure RPE is working correctly in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and information
• state why a good seal between the face and RPE is required, the relevance of fit tests and the importance of being clean shaven
• outline the suitability, correct use, storage and maintenance of protective clothing, including clothing used for transit
