Ventilation of enclosures used with asbestos removal
Overview
Standard details
CITB has developed this standard in discussion with industry
Duration
Minimum half day of 3 learning hours
Purpose/Scope
Training delivered against this standard will provide candidates with specific training with regards to air extraction, high efficiency particulate arrest (HEPA) filtration and maintaining a reduced air pressure in the asbestos removal enclosure to a level that is below that outside the enclosure (negative pressure). The objective of this training is to provide learners with the knowledge and understanding to set up asbestos removal enclosures for in compliance with Regulation 16, Duty to prevent or reduce the spread of asbestos.
The scope of this standard covers:
- air management as a control measure
- the terms negative pressure, airflow and air movement and their relationship to each other
- calculating required airflow for asbestos removal enclosures
- the principle of that ‘air in’ equals ‘air out’ and what this means in practice
- use of additional air inlets to ensure correct airflow and airlock flap displacement
- practical exercise to demonstrate the principle of ‘air in’ equals ‘air out’, the use of additional air inlets and airlock flap displacement
- use of anemometers to measure airflow
Occupational relevance
Training delivered against this standard would be relevant to the following occupational groups:
- operative and craft
- supervision
- management
Candidate pre-requisites
There are no candidate pre-requisites as part of this standard.
Instruction/Supervision
As a minimum, course instructors must be able to demonstrate that, in relation to this standard, they have:
- a train the trainer or instructional techniques course certificate e.g. NVQ Level 4 award in learning and development, higher or equivalent
- successfully completed training to this standard
- at least 2 years relevant industrial experience
- a verifiable CV
Delivery
Delivery may be in an on or off the job environment.
All materials and equipment must be of a suitable quality and quantity for candidates to achieve learning outcomes, and must comply with relevant legislation.
All information, instruction and training given should include an appropriate level of detail, be suitable to the work being done, and use written materials, oral presentation and practical demonstration as necessary.
The class size and candidate/instructor ratio must allow training to be delivered in a safe manner and enable candidates to achieve the learning outcomes.
The following delivery methods must be used in the delivery of this standard:
- classroom (i.e. formal training course)
- practical training
This standard is considered to contain 51% or more theoretical learning.
This standard is considered to be set at an intermediate level.
Assessment
For the successful completion of training a test, set by the course instructor, should indicate that the trainee has successfully completed the training programme.
Quality assurance
Quality assurance against this standard will require initial approval of the training organisation and their content mapped to the standard.
CITB will also conduct an approval intervention, either desk-based or centre visit, to ensure the training organisation can meet the requirements of the Training Standard.
Approved training organisations will be required to present information on records of training and assessment upon request to CITB for desk based analysis. They will also be visited annually by the CITB quality assurance team.
Renewal/refresher
No requirement to renew the this training
Approval date
April 2019
Review cycle
Either on request or in 3 year(s) from approval date.
Learning outcomes
The candidate will be able to:
- Explain how good air management is used as a control measure during asbestos removal from within an enclosure.
- Explain what negative pressure, air flow and air movement are in relation to ventilation of an asbestos removal enclosure.
- Explain the principle of ‘air in’ equals ‘air out’.
- Calculate required airflow for asbestos removal enclosures.
- Explain how airlock flap displacement can be used to determine whether good airflow has been achieved.
- Explain how an anemometer can be used to measure air flow.
