Panel wall and column formwork for general operatives

Overview

This standard is designed to provide the skills / information required to erect and dismantle vertical formwork. This is to cover vertical formwork for typical building applications utilising standard proprietary formwork systems

Duration

Minimum 2 days of 6 learning hours per day

Purpose/scope

Employers have legal duties under health and safety legislation and common law to ensure operatives are adequately trained in the work equipment they use. This standard is designed to provide the skills / information required to erect and dismantle vertical formwork. This is to cover vertical formwork for typical building applications utilising standard proprietary formwork systems

This training would be relevant for concrete frame operatives, formworkers and supervisors.

Occupational relevance

Training delivered against this standard would be relevant to the following occupational groups:

  • operative and craft
  • supervision.

Candidate pre-requisites

Candidates must have successfully completed an NVQ Level 2 in a construction discipline and hold a current CSCS Card. In addition, operatives require at least 6 months’ UK site experience beforehand.

Instruction/supervision

As a minimum, course instructors must be able to demonstrate that, in relation to this standard, they have:

  • a train the trainer or instructional techniques course certificate (minimum PTLL’s, EAT Level 3)
  • at least 5 years relevant industrial experience
  • practical elements to be observed by a minimum A1 or CAVA assessor
  • a verifiable CV.

Delivery

Delivery may be in an on or off the job environment.

All materials and equipment must be of a suitable quality and quantity for candidates to achieve learning outcomes, and must comply with relevant legislation.

Classroom / training facility with suitable IT and presentation equipment i.e. projector / screen or TV monitor.

The class size and candidate / instructor ratio (max 9:1) must allow training to be delivered in a safe manner and enable candidates to achieve the learning outcomes.

This standard is considered to contain 51 per cent or more practical training.

This standard is considered to be set at an intermediate level.

Assessment

For the successful completion of training, candidates must complete an end of course practical assessment and knowledge test that measures the learning outcomes and has a pass or fail criteria of 65 per cent at all stages.

Safety critical elements will have a 100 per cent pass mark requirement.

Theory and practical workbooks to be evaluated and verified by a minimum A1 or CAVA Qualified Assessor.

Quality assurance

Quality assurance against this standard will require initial approval of the training organisation and their content mapped to the standard.

CITB will also conduct an approval intervention, either desk-based or centre visit, to ensure the training organisation can meet the requirements of the training standard.

Approved training organisations (ATOs) will be required to present information on records of training and assessment upon request to CITB for desk based analysis. They will also be visited annually by the CITB quality assurance team.

Renewal/refresher

Legislation in this area demands the candidate carries out a 1 day refresher (including assessment) of this standard every 5 years.

Learning outcomes

Learning outcomes
The candidate will be able to: Additional guidance to support learning outcome:
Describe the basic principles of panel soffit formwork including pour rate and concrete pressure variations. Effects of concrete temperature, mix etc
Describe structure and vertical formwork terminology.  
Describe the purpose and functions of components.   i.e. alignment, plumbing & wind restraint
Interpret a design drawing, establish correct tools, equipment and documentation required.    
Identify the assembly area, correct panel/ component sizes and know the erection/striking sequence including lifting limitations and inspections required.    
Safely erect and strike the formwork for three practical tasks in accordance with specified drawings, including panel cleaning & general maintenance.  i.e. straight, corner, T-shape, stop end erection, column
Identify and describe potential hazards and risks associated with formwork To include environmental impact and quality issues.      
Identify and describe safety features, safe working practices at all stages. Including handling and maintenance.      

Additional information about this standard

Training must be taken on consecutive days or within 7 days.

In addition to this training it is recommended that a toolbox talk on the safe use of suppliers equipment is undertaken.
