Reinforced concrete for engineers and supervisors

Overview

This standard aims to provide learners including engineers’ foreman, supervisors, gangers and graduates with knowledge and understanding of inspecting, pouring and testing of products relating to steel reinforcement, formwork and poured concrete.

Duration

3 days of 6 learning hours

Purpose/Scope

The purpose of this standard is to provide the delegate with the knowledge to support the following:

  • materials
  • storage
  • erecting/building from drawings
  • building formwork shutters around reinforcement
  • checking cover
  • visual pre-pour inspections
  • identifying and rectifying problems
  • operational elements of concrete
  • common issues in concrete and steel design
  • selecting aggregates, cement and admixtures
  • terminology
  • carry out slump tests
  • cubes for compaction
  • testing plastic concrete

Training delivered against this standard would be relevant to the following occupational group(s):

  • operative and craft
  • supervision

Delegates pre-requisites

There are no delegate pre-requisites as part of this standard

Instruction/Supervision

As a minimum, course trainers must be able to demonstrate that, in relation to this standard, they have:

  • an award in education and training (or equivalent, as per requirements for approved training organisations)
  • a verifiable CV demonstrating extensive experience in construction across a broad range of construction projects (civils, building etc.) and current experience / CPD
  • successfully completed training to this standard
  • at least 10 years relevant industrial experience

Delivery

Delivery may be in an on or off the job environment.

All materials and equipment must be of a suitable quality and quantity for delegates to achieve learning outcomes and must comply with relevant legislation.

The class size and delegate/trainer ratio must allow training to be delivered in a safe manner and enable delegates to achieve the learning outcomes.

This standard is considered to contain 51% or more practical training.

This standard is considered to be set at an intermediate level.

Assessment

Methods of assessment considered appropriate for training delivered against this standard are:

For the successful completion of training, the trainer must be satisfied that the delegate has achieved all learning outcomes.

Quality assurance

Assured

Quality assurance against this standard will require initial approval of the training organisation and their content mapped to the standard.

CITB will also conduct an approval intervention, either desk-based or centre visit, to ensure the training organisation can meet the requirements of the training standard.

Approved training organisations (ATOs) will be required to present information on records of training and assessment upon request to CITB for desk-based analysis. They will also be visited annually by the CITB quality assurance team.

Renewal/refresher

There are no mandatory renewal or recommended refresher requirements for this standard.

Learning outcomes

The delegate will be able to:

  • identify different materials, bar types, diameter, shape code and schedules
    • reinforcement
  • identify the need for storage and call off of reinforcement
    • including handling of reinforcement
  • identify information from drawing specification
  • erect/build steel reinforcement to specification
  • identify traditional or system formwork shutters and components/ accessories to erect around
  • reinforcement to specification
  • build and erect formwork shutters around reinforcement to specification from drawings
  • transfer levels around formwork and reinforcement, checking cover
  • carry out visual pre pour inspections and identify problems and inaccuracies
  • rectify problems and sign off inspection
  • describe the operational elements of concrete
  • identify common issues in concrete and steel design
  • describe selection and function of aggregates, cement and admixtures
  • clarify elements of precise concrete designation terminology
  • carry out slump tests and use information to ensure appropriate workability
  • prepare cubes for compaction and translate results, including:
    • testing of hardened concrete
    • casting test specimens (cubes)
    • storage of specimens and non-destructive testing for strength assessment
  • methods placing
    • Skip, pump, tremie, slip-form, jump-form, foamed concrete, sprayed concrete
  • test plastic concrete
    • Discussion and identification around sampling, consistence – slump and flow, self-compacting concrete: slump-flow and other tests
    • entrained air
    • fibres
    • plastic density
    • estimating yield
  • finish and strike formwork
    • Practical application and striking forms or formwork, cleaning and storage of materials and equipment
