Environmental awareness in construction

Overview

The purpose of this standard is to give the candidate an introduction to environmental issues in construction. This can be applied to any job role across the sectors to embed the main environmental challenges that need to be incorporated and managed in a construction project

Purpose/Scope

  • environmental issues and risks
  • impacts and opportunities
  • resource efficiency, waste and materials management
  • pollution, prevention and control
  • legislation, regulation and enforcement
  • environmental management systems.

Occupational Relevance

Training delivered against this standard would be relevant to the following occupational group(s):

  • operative and craft
  • supervision
  • management and leadership

Candidate Pre-requisites

There are no candidate pre-requisites as part of this standard.

Instruction/ Supervision

As a minimum, course instructors must be able to demonstrate that, in relation to this standard, they have:

  • a train the trainer or instructional techniques course certificate
  • successfully completed training to this standard
  • at least 2 years relevant experience in the environmental/sustainability sector and demonstrated technical competence
  • a verifiable CV

In addition, they must hold at least ONE of the following:

  • a degree in an Environmental or Sustainability discipline
  • NVQ/SVQ Level 3/4 in Environmental Management
  • NEBOSH Environmental Diploma
  • Associate Membership of IEMA.

Delivery

Delivery may be in an on or off the job environment.

All materials and equipment must be of a suitable quality and quantity for candidates to achieve learning outcomes, and must comply with relevant legislation.

The class size and candidate/instructor ratio must allow training to be delivered in a safe manner and enable candidates to achieve the learning outcomes.

The following delivery methods may be used in the delivery of this standard:

  • classroom
  • a blend of classroom and e-learning

This standard is considered to contain 51% or more theoretical learning.

Assessment

For the successful completion of training, candidates must complete an end of course practical assessment or knowledge test that measures the learning outcomes and has a pass or fail criteria.

Quality Assurance

CITB will gain assurance through the third party’s quality arrangements.

Approved Training Organisation’s will be required to supply confirmation of approval (centre approval and scheme approval) with the related third party awarding organisation or body. In most cases this will be an approval certificate provided by the third party awarding organisation or body, listing the routes, qualifications and categories they are approved to deliver. In addition, a copy of the most recent external quality assurance monitoring report will be required, relating to the standard that you wish to be approved for.

This information will be reviewed by CITB’s quality assurance team. Approval will be subject to the required third party documentation being supplied by you. As part of the quality assurance checks, CITB may confirm the accuracy of documentation with the issuing organisation.

Renewal

There are no mandatory renewal or recommended refreshment requirements for this standard.

Identify the legislation, offences and penalties relating to construction works Cautions/warnings, enforcement notices, prohibition notices, suspension or revocation of permits/licences, variations of permit conditions, injunctions, sanctions, financial penalties, Environmental Sentencing Guidelines (UK).
Define enforcement methods. Enforcement notices, prohibition notices, suspension or revocation of permits/licences, variations of permit conditions.
Identify key statutory compliance requirements. Key statutory compliance requirements for energy, climate change, waste management, conservation/biodiversity, pollution and property management.
Identify the key elements of international environmental agreements.  
Define pollution and key terms used in relation to pollution.  
Understand methods to prevent pollution.  
Understand potential consequences if organisations cause pollution of the environment.  
State the purpose of environmental legislation.  
Describe a Construction Environment Management Plan and how it should be used.  
Identify practical actions employees can undertake to support environmental sustainability. Manage materials on site to reduce waste, save money, comply with legislation
Identify the environmental management structure within organisations.
