Purpose/scope
The purpose of this standard is to provide the learner with the knowledge and skills to support the following:
Scope:
To identify different types of templates, the materials they are made from and their applications, and produce a template to a specification using the correct materials, tools and processes
Learner pre-requisites
There are no learner pre-requisites as part of this standard
Instruction/ supervision
As a minimum, course trainers must be able to demonstrate that, in relation to this standard, they have:
- an award in education and training (or equivalent, as per requirements for approved training organisations)
- at least 2 years industrial experience relevant to the scope of the standard
- a verifiable CV
Delivery
All materials and equipment must be of a suitable quality and quantity for learners to achieve learning outcomes and must comply with relevant legislation
The learning environment, class size and learner/trainer ratio must allow training to be delivered in a safe manner and enable learners to achieve the learning outcomes
The following delivery methods may be used in the delivery of this standard:
- face to face learning environment only (such as classroom/workshop etc.)
This standard is predominantly practical training
This standard is considered to be set at an entry level
Assessment
Informally Assessed
For the successful completion of training, the trainer must be satisfied that the learner has achieved all learning outcomes
Quality assurance
Assured
Quality assurance against this standard will require initial approval of the training organisation and their content mapped to the standard.
CITB will also conduct an approval intervention, either desk-based or centre visit, to ensure the training organisation can meet the requirements of the training standard.
Approved training organisations (ATOs) will be required to present information on records of training and assessment upon request to CITB for desk-based analysis. They will also be visited annually by the CITB quality assurance team.

Learning outcomes
The learner will be able to:
Identify different templates and their applications.
Delivery guidance:
Learners must know and understand the applications of the following templates:
- section (joint) mould
- reverse mould
- bed mould
- face mould
Learners must understand the types of information that are recorded on templates.
The following is considered to be relevant information:
- identification of the type of template (e.g. reverse)
- identification of the job (to be advised by the center)
- top bed
- bottom bed
- face / clean face
- name and date
Assessment criteria:
The tutor must be satisfied that the learner understands how to identify the different applications and provide the necessary information in a clear manor
Identifying the different template materials and their applications
Delivery guidance:
Learners must know the difference between the different materials used and the reason why they are used
The following materials and their durability must be covered:
- zinc
- plastic (varying thicknesses)
The following are considered to be relevant applications:
- section (joint) mould
- reverse mould
- bed mould
- face mould
The learner must know and understand the specific risks and sustainability requirements associated with the materials above
Assessment criteria:
The tutor must be satisfied that the learner understands the different materials and their applications listed above
Understand the production process of templates
Delivery guidance:
- Learners must know and understand how to:
- select relevant documentation (drawings, specifications etc) to identify the purpose of the template
- select appropriate setting out material and drawing equipment
- identify and select the correct temple, materials, tools and resources
- set out the full-size draft template using paper or card to a specification
- transfer draft template details to the selected materials material
- produce templates to a specification
- annotate templates with necessary information
- work in accordance with RAMS

- plastic
- zinc

- tape measure / ruler
Assessment criteria:
The tutor must be satisfied that the learner knows and understands the tools, materials, resources and processes to produce a basic and reverse template to a specification that includes the delivery guidance above
Produce a basic template and a reverse template to a specification
Delivery guidance:
- Templates may also be referred to as templets
- The learner must be able to:
- select appropriate template materials
- transfer setting out details to template material
- produce templates to a specification
- annotate templates with necessary information
- work in accordance with RAMS
Template materials:
- The learner must produce a template out of plastic or zinc but may use paper or card in the preparation phase and transfer to the chosen material
Setting out details:
- Learners must produce either an Ovolo or Cavetto template which will include fillets
Templates:
- Learners must produce at least one section and one reverse template
- * a section template may be referred to as joint template*
Assessment criteria:
The tutor must be satisfied that the learner can produce a basic and reverse template to a specification that includes the delivery guidance above
