Purpose/scope
The purpose of this standard is to provide the delegate with the knowledge and/or skills to support the following:
Scope:
- Duties of a supervisor
- Control of substances hazardous to health (COSHH) assessments, risk assessments and method statements (RAMS)
- Material health and safety data sheets
- Painting specifications
- ISO visual preparation standards
- Product data sheets
- Basic paint technology
- Paint failure
- Paint inspection (theoretical)
- Paint inspection (practical)

Training delivered against this standard would be relevant to the following occupational group(s):
- supervision
- leadership and management
Delegates pre-requisites
Delegates must have successfully completed Train the Painter Bronze 2 or have two years industrial coatings supervisor experience prior to attending this training.
Instruction/ supervision
As a minimum, course trainers must be able to demonstrate that, in relation to this standard, they have:
- ICorr, NACE or Frosio level 2
- an award in education and training (or equivalent, as per requirements for approved training organisations)
- at least 2 years industrial experience relevant to the scope of the standard
- a verifiable CV
- completed the Industrial coating supervisor course with an approved trainer
Delivery
All materials and equipment must be of a suitable quality and quantity for delegates to achieve learning outcomes and must comply with relevant legislation.
The learning environment, class size and delegate/trainer ratio must allow training to be delivered in a safe manner and enable delegates to achieve the learning outcomes.
The following delivery methods may be used in the delivery of this standard:
- face to face learning environment only (such as classroom/workshop etc.)
This standard is predominantly theoretical with 30% practical training.
This standard is considered to be set at an intermediate level.
Assessment
For the successful completion of training, delegates must complete an end of course knowledge test that measures all learning outcomes and has a pass or fail criteria.
Pass or fail criteria for this standard:
- 70% in each of the four examination papers
Methods of assessment considered appropriate for training delivered against this standard are:
- multiple choice questions
Where this training is assessed using multiple-choice questions, all learning outcomes must be covered over four examination papers with 10 questions in each paper and delegates are required to achieve an overall pass mark of at least 70% in each paper.
Quality assurance
Assured
Quality assurance against this standard will require initial approval of the training organisation and their content mapped to the standard.
CITB will also conduct an approval intervention, either desk-based or centre visit, to ensure the training organisation can meet the requirements of the training standard.
Approved training organisations (ATOs) will be required to present information on records of training and assessment upon request to CITB for desk-based analysis. They will also be visited annually by the CITB quality assurance team.

Understand the requirements for health and safety data sheets, usually referred to as material safety data sheet, from the coating manufacturers

- provide examples of relevant data which needs to be applied during the development of COSHH and RAMS

Understand the basic principles of a painting specification
Delivery guidance
- explain the basic principles and how each part of the specification lead to the correct:
- substrate preparation
- coating application
- environmental conditions to ensure the life expectancy of the coating is achieved

Understand the visual standards (ISO 8501) that are developed and used in the coatings industry, specifically the standards used in surface preparation
Delivery guidance
- present and explain ISO 8501, preparation of steel substrates before the application of paints and related products
- present and explain Part 1 – specification for rust grades and preparation grades of uncoated steel substrates and of steel substrates after the overall removal of previous coatings
- present and explain Part 4 - specification for rust grades, preparation grades and flash rust grades of steel substrates after the overall removal of previous coatings by high pressure water jetting

Understand how to read and understand the manufacturer's product data sheet, and the importance of using the product within the manufacturer's guidelines

- environmental conditions to ensure the life expectancy of the coating is achieved
Assessment requirements

Understand the basic constituents and properties of coatings used for corrosion control, and gain an insight into coating systems
Delivery guidance
- explain the main constituents of paints and what effect they have on performance
- how zinc and aluminium are used in cathodic protection
- convertible and non-convertible coatings
- curing mechanisms
- performance criteria for coating systems in given environments

Understand and identify the main types of coating failures

- explain the various coating defects and failures contained in Fitz Atlas
- explain how the defects can be remedied

Understand the requirements for painting inspection and the role a paint inspector plays on painting contracts including an understanding of the basic instruments and documentation used by inspectors

- explain the roles and responsibilities of the inspector on a painting contract
- theoretical use of inspection equipment and testing and why they are relevant to the inspector
- provide examples of the documentation that is required on a daily and weekly basis and the final reporting of all data

Use basic inspection equipment including environmental, surface profile, wet film and dry film thickness
