Installing fire protection encasements for steelwork with Glasroc F Firecase

Overview

Encasement systems provide 2 purposes, fire protection and aesthetics to create square columns and beams. This standard is designed to develop the practical skills in installing fire protection systems and understanding the process of specifying which product meets the fire protection requirements for steelwork between 60 and 180 minutes protection.

Purpose/ scope

Purpose:

Encasement systems provide 2 purposes, fire protection and aesthetics to create square columns and beams. This standard is designed to develop the practical skills in installing fire protection systems and understanding the process of specifying which product meets the fire protection requirements for steelwork between 60 and 180 minutes protection.

Scope:

  • use literature to determine fire protection for steelwork
  • develop a knowledge of L/V in relation to steelwork for columns, beams and joists
  • cutting methods for Glasroc F Firecase
  • methods for encasing beams
  • methods for encasing 3 sided columns
  • methods of fixings with staples , screws
  • how Glasroc F Firecase can be used with metal framed encasement systems.

Occupational relevance

Training delivered against this standard would be relevant to the following occupational group(s):

  • operative and craft
  • supervision.

Candidate pre-requisites

There are no candidate pre-requisites as part of this standard. However a basic knowledge of interior systems terminology and techniques would be beneficial.

Instruction/ supervision

As a minimum, course instructors must be able to demonstrate that, in relation to this standard, they have:

  • a train the trainer or instructional techniques course certificate
  • successfully completed training to this standard
  • at least 2 years relevant industrial experience
  • a verifiable CV.

Delivery

Delivery may be in an on or off the job environment.

All materials and equipment must be of a suitable quality and quantity for candidates to achieve learning outcomes and must comply with relevant legislation.

The following delivery methods may/may not be used in the delivery of this standard:

  • e-learning
  • classroom
  • workshop.

This standard is considered to contain 51% or more theoretical training.

This standard is considered to be set at an intermediate level.

Assessment

For the successful completion of training, candidates must complete an end of course practical assessment or knowledge test that measures the learning outcomes and has a pass or fail criteria.

Quality assurance

Assured

Quality assurance against this standard will require initial approval of the training organisation and their content mapped to the standard.

CITB will also conduct an approval intervention, either desk-based or centre visit, to ensure the training organisation can meet the requirements of the training standard.

Approved training organisations (ATOs) will be required to present information on records of training and assessment upon request to CITB for desk based analysis. They will also be visited annually by the CITB quality assurance team.

Renewal

There are no mandatory renewal or recommended refreshment requirements for this standard.

October 2019

Review cycle

Either on request or in 3 years from approval date.

Learning outcomes

The candidate will be able to:

  • Describe the range of thicknesses of fire protection.
  • Measure steelwork to enable off site cutting for fire protection boards.
  • Explain which screw lengths are used with which board thicknesses.
  • Describe the limitations for staple fixing boards.
  • Fix angle sections to beams and 3 sided columns.
  • Understand the need to firestop board joints.
  • Cut and install noggins or dwangs of Glasroc F Firecase as a method on 3 sided protection.
  • Explain the correct screw type for fixing Glasroc F Firecase.
  • Cut boards by hand and machine.
