Overview

The purpose of this course is to prepare the delegates for real world mural application. The advanced applying printed murals course covers more than just applying a mural on a flat wall. Complex surfaces, resolving problems with designs and handling obstacles are all covered in this advanced course.

Purpose/scope

The purpose of this course is to prepare the delegates for real world mural application. The advanced applying printed murals course covers more than just applying a mural on a flat wall. Complex surfaces, resolving problems with designs and handling obstacles are all covered in this advanced course.

Scope:

  • resolving installation issues of a mural onto a more complex surface such as a window reveal or a chimney breast.
  • identify issues with bespoke mural designs, take into consideration any obstacles on the wall that degrade the overall impact of the image
  • this advanced course gives the delegate the opportunity to take their skills to a more commercial level and give them the confidence to deliver mural installation as a specialist service.

The purpose of the ‘Advanced applying printed murals’ standard is for delegates who have previously passed training on the ‘applying printed murals’ course and can provide proof of attendance.

Training delivered against this standard would be relevant to the following occupational group(s):

  • operative and craft
  • supervision

Delegates pre-requisites

Delegates must have successfully completed training to the “Applying printed murals” standard

Instruction/supervision

As a minimum, course trainers must be able to demonstrate that, in relation to this standard, they have:

  • an award in education and training (or equivalent, as per requirements for approved training organisations)
  • successfully completed training to this standard
  • at least 2 years relevant industrial experience
  • a verifiable CV

Delivery

Delivery may be in an on or off the job environment.

All materials and equipment must be of a suitable quality and quantity for delegates to achieve learning outcomes and must comply with relevant legislation.

The class size and delegate/trainer ratio must allow training to be delivered in a safe manner and enable delegates to achieve the learning outcomes.

The following delivery methods may be used in the delivery of this standard:

  • This course is mainly practical (over 50%) with some classroom.

This standard is considered to contain 51% or more practical training.

This standard is considered to be set at an advanced level.

Assessment

Methods of assessment considered appropriate for training delivered against this standard are:

For the successful completion of training, the trainer must be satisfied that the delegate has achieved all learning outcomes.

Quality assurance

Assured

Quality assurance against this standard will require initial approval of the training organisation and their content mapped to the standard.

CITB will also conduct an approval intervention, either desk-based or centre visit, to ensure the training organisation can meet the requirements of the training standard.

Approved training organisations (ATOs) will be required to present information on records of training and assessment upon request to CITB for desk-based analysis. They will also be visited annually by the CITB quality assurance team.

Renewal

There are no mandatory renewal or recommended refresher requirements for this standard.

Learning outcomes

Learning outcomes
The delegate will be able to: Additional guidance to support learning outcome

explain health and safety implications of hanging murals

 

be able to use access equipment correctly for more difficult areas, for example a staircase

 

understand image considerations when selecting an image for a bespoke mural.

File size and image suitability will be looked at, also copyright issues

understand typical image problems when positioned on a real wall. For example, centring, positioning of obstacles on the wall such as radiators, light switches, sockets, windows etc.

Examples of good and bad placement will be discussed with solutions for each

how to handle a range of difficult surfaces and check suitability of wall surfaces

Although the students will apply a mural to both a window real and around a fireplace, other difficult areas will be discussed including a staircase and large span areas.

protect the work area prior to installation of the mural

 

remove items off the wall before installation, for example wall lights

 

prepare the surface to receive the mural

 

measure up the wall area

 

check that the mural and associated insert pieces (for the window reveal) match and are the correct size. Check that the image falls correctly onto the wall area and that there is the correct amount of bleed. Check that the window or fireplace opening fits correctly with the image as planned

 

successfully install the mural on the window reveal

 

successfully install the mural around the fireplace

 

leave the work area clean and tidy, including replacing any removed items

 

clean and store wallpapering equipment
