Applying Printed Murals

Purpose/scope
Purpose:
This standard is about applying printed murals to a wall area. It includes working with different types of murals and understanding their advantages and disadvantages. The standard also includes the required preparation of the wall area before applying the mural, the availability and suitability of different types of adhesive, Measuring, setting out and applying the mural to the wall.
Scope:
- Understanding different types of murals including multi plate and one piece murals.
- Understanding how murals are created and considerations for images when creating a bespoke mural.
- Identifying the tools and equipment needed to apply a mural.
- Preparation of the wall area.
- Understanding the different types of adhesive and which ones will be suitable for the application of a mural and why.
- Measuring up the wall area for ordering the mural.
- Preparing and setting out the work area for application of the mural.
- Apply a multi-plate mural, considerations to be allowed for.
- Apply a one piece mural.

Training delivered against this standard would be relevant to the following occupational group(s):
- operative and craft
- supervision
Delegate pre-requisites
There are no delegate pre-requisites as part of this standard. However a basic knowledge of wallpaper terminology and techniques would be beneficial.
Instruction/ supervision
As a minimum, course trainers must be able to demonstrate that, in relation to this standard, they have:
- a train the trainer or instructional techniques course certificate
- successfully completed training to this standard
- at least 2 years relevant industrial experience
Delivery
Delivery may be in an on or off the job environment.
All materials and equipment must be of a suitable quality and quantity for delegates to achieve learning outcomes, and must comply with relevant legislation.
The class size and delegate/trainer ratio must allow training to be delivered in a safe manner and enable delegates to achieve the learning outcomes.
The following delivery methods may/may not be used in the delivery of this standard:
- a blend of classroom and workshop
- courses mapped to this standard cannot be delivered remotely as there are practical activities
This standard is considered to contain 51 per cent or more practical training.
Assessment
Approved training organisations (ATOs) will be required to present information on records of training and assessment upon request to CITB for desk-based analysis. They will also be visited annually by the CITB quality assurance team
Quality assurance
Assured:
Quality Assurance against this standard will require initial approval of the training organisation and their content mapped to the standard. CITB will also conduct an approval intervention, either desk-based or centre visit, to ensure the Training Organisation can meet the requirements of the Training Standard. Approved Training Organisations will be required to present information on records of training and assessment upon request to CITB for desk-based analysis. They will also be visited annually by the CITB Quality Assurance team.

Learning outcomes
The delegate will know:
- different types of mural
- image considerations if the customer is providing an image
- the tools and equipment required
- different types of adhesive available
- health and safety implications of wallpapering
The delegate will be able to:
- check suitability of previously prepared surfaces
- provide protection by sheeting, masking and removing items
- isolate electrical supply and loosen any sockets and switches prior to installation
- prepare the surface correctly to receive the mural
- prepare the adhesive before use
- measure up the wall area
- check the mural is the correct size
- install a multi plate mural
- install a one piece mural
- plan the safeguard of operatives and the general public from work activities
- clean and store equipment
