Purpose / Scope
The aim of this course is to introduce decorators into the process of painting furniture on site using an airless sprayer.
The course is designed for decorators who have some experience of airless spraying or have done an introduction to airless spraying.
The scope covers:
- Removing doors and labelling
- How to handle the edges of MDF furniture
- How to spray the carcass part of the furniture
- How to spray the doors
- The use of drying racks and drying rooms
- How to avoid overspray ruining the finish
- How to professionally caulk and fill joints and gaps
- How to sand and prepare for the next coat
- Applying finishing coats

Candidate pre-requisites
Candidates must have successfully completed the Introduction to airless spraying course within the last 2 years or have extensive experience with an airless sprayer and be able to demonstrate knowledge of the health and safety aspects of spraying.
Instruction / supervision
As a minimum, course instructors must be able to demonstrate that in relation to this standard they have:
- A train the trainer or instructional techniques course certificate
- Successfully completed training to this standard
- At least 5 years relevant industrial experience
- A verifiable CV
- Current experience in the industry.
Delivery
Delivery is in an off the job environment. Suitable areas must be available in the workshops to give enough spraying experience to the students. There needs to be a classroom environment to cover the underpinning knowledge.
All materials and equipment must be of a suitable quality and quantity for candidates to achieve learning outcomes and must comply with relevant legislation.
Materials must be from a range of manufacturers to give the student and understanding of what different brands of paint are like to spray.
The class size and candidate/instructor ratio must allow training to be delivered in a safe manner and enable candidates to achieve the learning outcomes. A class size of 6 students to 1 tutor is recommended.

Assessment
For the successful completion of training, candidates must complete an end of course practical assessment and knowledge test that measures the learning outcomes and has a pass or fail criteria.
Quality assurance
Quality Assurance against this standard will require initial approval of the training organisation and their content mapped to the standard.
CITB will also conduct an approval intervention, either desk-based or centre visit, to ensure the Training Organisation can meet the requirements of the Training Standard.
Approved Training Organisations will be required to present information on records of training and assessment upon request to CITB for desk based analysis. They will also be visited annually by the CITB Quality Assurance team.

Additional information about this standard
This standard has been designed specifically for spraying furniture on site and does not cover systems and products that would be used in a spray booth. This standard has also been designed for spraying by airless sprayer. There is a different course which looks at other methods of spraying however this is not within the scope of this course.
