The purpose of the Fitted furniture renovation - Refresher standard is for delegates who have previously passed training to the full Fitted furniture renovation standard or subsequent refresher training and can provide proof of attendance.

Purpose/scope

The purpose of the Fitted furniture renovation - Refresher standard is for delegates who have previously passed training to the full Fitted furniture renovation standard or subsequent refresher training and can provide proof of attendance.

Delegates pre-requisites

Delegates must have successfully completed training to the Fitted furniture renovation standard or subsequent refresher 5 years prior to attending this refresher.

Instruction/supervision

As a minimum, course trainers must be able to demonstrate that, in relation to this standard, they have:

  • an award in education and training (or equivalent, as per requirements for approved training organisations)
  • successfully completed training to this standard
  • at least 5 years relevant industrial experience
  • a verifiable CV

Delivery

Delivery is in an off the job environment. Suitable areas must be available in the workshops to give enough spraying experience to the students. There needs to be a classroom environment to cover the underpinning knowledge.

All materials and equipment must be of a suitable quality and quantity for delegates to achieve learning outcomes and must comply with relevant legislation. Materials must be from a range of manufacturers to give the student and understanding of what different brands of paint are like to spray.

The class size and delegate/trainer ratio must allow training to be delivered in a safe manner and enable delegates to achieve the learning outcomes. A class size of 6 students to 1 tutor is recommended.

Methods of assessment considered appropriate for training delivered against this standard are:

For the successful completion of training, delegates must complete an end of course practical assessment or knowledge test that measures all learning outcomes and has a pass or fail criteria.

Where this training is assessed using multiple-choice questions, a minimum of 10 questions must be asked and delegates are required to achieve an overall pass mark of at least 80%.

Quality assurance

Assured

Quality assurance against this standard will require initial approval of the training organisation and their content mapped to the standard.

CITB will also conduct an approval intervention, either desk-based or centre visit, to ensure the training organisation can meet the requirements of the training standard.

Approved training organisations (ATOs) will be required to present information on records of training and assessment upon request to CITB for desk-based analysis. They will also be visited annually by the CITB quality assurance team.

For furniture fitted on site this is a big advantage to get that truly fitted furniture look. This will look at the best way to get a perfect finish on all the filling and caulking. What works on a skirting will not work on an expensive piece of furniture.

the student will be able to prepare the edges of the MDF to give a professional finish.

Although not all furniture is made from MDF, this can be one of the more difficult substrates to handle. Here we look at turning the edges into a super smooth professional finish.

the student will be able to remove the doors and label them up correctly.

This is where it is important to understand that when you take a kitchen apart, it needs to go back together the same way to avoid any issues.

the student will be able to sand and prepare the furniture to give a professional finish.

This looks at products that are available to get that flawless finish on furniture.

the student will be able to spray the carcass of the furniture correctly without runs or defects

Spraying into the cupboards or carcass is very difficult because of the confined space and the blowback from the spray process. Here we look at the correct technique as well as some of the things that don’t work and why.

the student will be able to spray the doors of the furniture correctly.

The doors have been removed and we look at the best way to actually spray the whole of the door in one process and then place it for drying so that it does not get damages. Racking systems are looked at here and the advantages and disadvantages of each system.

the student will know how to prepare the unit to be painted.

Preparation is key and different surfaces need different preparation.

the student will know which paints are the most suitable for painting furniture and how to prepare them.

A range of paints are looked at. Customers will ask for a wide range of furniture to be painted from a full melamine kitchen to solid oak bedframes and it is important to understand products and systems that work.

Additional information about this standard

This standard has been designed specifically for spraying furniture on site and does not cover systems and products that would be used in a spray booth. This standard has also been designed for spraying by airless sprayer. There is a different course which looks at other methods of spraying however this is not within the scope of this course.
