Duration

Minimum 1 or 2 days of 6 learning hours per day (to suit range of types covered)

Purpose/Scope

The purpose of this standard is to provide the candidate with the knowledge and skills to construct/install VRS proprietary safety barrier systems, in a work gang (VRS – vehicle restraint systems).

The scope of this standard covers: 

  • overview of PSBS including: single systems, double-height systems, double-sided systems, tension beams system, tension rope systems, and terminations.
  • safety review
  • hand tools and equipment
  • interpreting information
  • setting out
  • foundations
  • installation 
  • tensioning
  • torque

Occupational relevance

Training delivered against this standard would be relevant to the following occupational group(s):

  • operative and craft
  • supervision
  • management and leadership.

Candidate pre-requisites

There are no candidate pre-requisites as part of this standard. However, performing the work would require additional basic site skills training including (not exhaustive):

  • safe working on roadways, use of hand and power tools, underground services identification, manual handling, abrasive wheels, use of petrol cut off saws, dust control, water suppressant, personal protective equipment (PPE) use, and respiratory protective equipment (RPE) face fit.

Instruction/Supervision

As a minimum, course instructors must be able to demonstrate that, in relation to this standard, they have:

  • a train the trainer or instructional techniques course certificate
  • successfully completed training to this standard
  • at least 2 years relevant industrial experience
  • a verifiable CV.

Delivery

The following method(s) may be used in the delivery of this standard:

  • classroom and safe simulated work site

All materials and equipment must be of a suitable quality and quantity for candidates to achieve learning outcomes, and must comply with relevant legislation.

The class size and candidate/instructor ratio must allow training to be delivered in a safe manner and enable candidates to achieve the learning outcomes.

Assessment

For the successful completion of training, candidates must complete an end of course practical assessment that measures the learning outcomes and has a pass or fail criteria

Quality assurance

Quality assurance against this standard will require initial approval of the training organisation and their content mapped to the standard.

CITB will also conduct an approval intervention, either desk-based or centre visit, to ensure the training organisation can meet the requirements of the training standard.

Approved training organisations (ATOs) will be required to present information on records of training and assessment upon request to CITB for desk based analysis. They will also be visited annually by the CITB quality assurance team.

Renewal

There are no mandatory renewal or recommended refreshment requirements for this standard.

Learning outcomes

Briefly describe NPSBS barrier systems including: tensioned corrugated beam, open box beam, un-tensioned corrugated beam, RHS and double height box beam.   
Review of hazards, risks, controls, and safe work practices while working on low- and high-speed roads, including: PPE, cones, and emergency response. Demonstrate by working safely during all practical activities 
Use hand tools and equipment for: dismantling, installing, marking, measuring, drilling, repairing, tightening, and tensioning.  
Interpret manufacturer’s instructions, layout drawings, and standards Printed examples
Extracts from codes of practice
Set out PSBS systems including: site/barrier preparation, clearances, datums, reference points, transitions, measuring, spacing, beam/rope height, and marking out.  
Install foundations for PSBS posts that are: driven, concrete set, excavated, socket set, surface mounted, and demountable including: removal, repair, excavation, coring, anchorages, filter drain, post/socket, passive filler, reinforcement, waterproofing, formwork, and concrete (pour, vibrate, compact).  
Install straight, curved, and surface mounted PSBS barriers including: final fix, terminal sections/flares, drilling, straps, expansion joints, and regular joints.  
Tension PSBS systems including: tensioner assemblies, adjuster assemblies, expansion assemblies, and rope tension indicators.  
Torque PSBS systems including: using tools, methods, settings, thread engagement, temperatures, and calibration.
