Installation of fire door assemblies and door sets

Duration

Minimum two days of 6 learning hours per day.

Purpose/scope

The purpose of training delivered against this standard is to provide candidates with knowledge covering the installation requirements for timber fire door assemblies and door sets.

The scope of this standard covers:

• The role of timber fire door assemblies and door sets and why it is important that they are installed correctly
• Understanding how fire door assemblies and door sets work and their place in the wider passive fire protection system
• Legislation and guidance associated with fire door assemblies and door sets
• Considerations before installing fire door assemblies and door sets
• Considerations when installing fire door assemblies and door sets
• Considerations on completion of the installation of fire door assemblies and door sets

Occupational relevance

Training delivered against this standard would be relevant to the following occupational group(s):

• operative and craft
• supervision.

Candidate pre-requisites

Candidates undertaking this standard would be expected to have the knowledge and skills required to install standard timber door assemblies.

Instruction/supervision

As a minimum, course instructors must be able to demonstrate that, in relation to this standard, they have:

• a train the trainer or instructional techniques course certificate
• successfully completed training to this standard 
• at least 2 years relevant industrial experience as a fitter
• a verifiable CV.

Delivery

Delivery may be in an on or off the job environment.

All materials and equipment must be of a suitable quality and quantity for candidates to achieve learning outcomes and must comply with relevant legislation.

The class size and candidate to instructor ratio must allow training to be delivered in a safe manner and enable candidates to achieve the learning outcomes.

The following delivery methods may be used in the delivery of this standard:

• classroom
• e-learning
• a blend of classroom and e-learning
• workplace

This standard is considered to contain 51 per cent or more theory learning.

This standard is considered to be set at an intermediate level.

Assessment

For the successful completion of training, the trainer must be satisfied that the candidate has achieved all of the learning outcomes and achieved the end of course assessment.

Quality assurance

Assured

Quality assurance against this standard will require initial approval of the training organisation and their content mapped to the standard. 

CITB will also conduct an approval intervention, either desk-based or centre visit, to ensure the training organisation can meet the requirements of the training standard. 

Approved training organisations (ATOs) will be required to present information on records of training and assessment upon request to CITB for desk based analysis. They will also be visited annually by the CITB quality assurance team.

Renewal/refresher

There is no mandatory renewal or recommended refreshment requirements for this standard.

The candidate will be able to:

• Describe the role of timber fire door assemblies and door sets and why it is important that they are installed correctly.
• Describe how fire door assemblies and door sets work and their place in the wider passive fire protection system.
• Describe the relevant legislation and guidance associated with fire door assemblies and door sets.
• Describe the actions that must be undertaken before installing fire door assemblies and door sets:
  • pre-installation planning
  • pre-installation documentation
  • pre-installation product checks
  • installation site assessment.

• Describe the actions that must be undertaken when installing fire door assemblies and door sets:
  • installing the fire door assembly and doorset
  • installing ironmongery
  • installing the door closer
  • filling the linear gap.

• Describe the actions that must be undertaken on completion of the installation of fire door assemblies and door sets:
  • Inspection, recording and documentation requirements
  • Site clean up
  • Post installation checks
  • Sign-off and handover.
